June 2017
Dear Mr./Mrs.,

The summer is often dominated by frivolous news stories and exaggerated coverage of unimportant events. The traditional slow summer news season is upon us. Though you wouldn’t have noticed that at Nyenrode. Scrolling through this newsletter you will see the range of small and large events that have taken place.

I would like to call your attention to one particular news story that appears very modestly among the others: the first graduates of the master in Fiscal Law. This is certainly no small matter. Starting up an accredited program that confers a recognized degree in the Netherlands is no mean feat. And when the program runs extremely smoothly from day one, a compliment is due to the team that set it up, but the best compliment is, of course, the graduation ceremony of the first class of students to complete the degree.

All of this took place a few weeks ago and we are now preparing for new activities, of course, both during the summer and for the start of the new academic year. That new academic year will start with an updated strategy 2020. Many people have given their input to make the update as ambitious but also as realistic as possible. Research will in any event receive much more attention in the coming months, but let us not forget the major work that lies ahead of us in fully incorporating the Amsterdam activities in our university.

All fairly important matters, you might say. So is there no breezy summer news? But of course. Issue 26 of the Donald Duck magazine describes an exciting adventure in which, although Nyenrode’s name is misspelled, the cartoon leaves no doubt about where it took its inspiration.

I wish you all a wonderful summer, but if the weather does not cooperate, perhaps huddling around a cup of tea is not a bad idea? If I may I’d like to promote a lovely initiative from one of our bachelor students: www.benjah.nl.

PhD degree Stella van Rijn
On Monday, June 26, Stella van Rijn obtained her doctorate for her dissertation “Transformative Governance for the Knowledge Democracy. The dynamics of broadening participative mechanisms in representative democratic systems”. In her dissertation, she argues that more democratic mechanisms should be introduced to enable citizens to reach informed positions and, on the basis of that, make a contribution to the debate, the decision making and implementation. The ultimate goal is to give a community the power to be ‘co-creators’ who bear shared responsibility.

Second annual conference of the Foundation for Auditing Research

That was stressed by outgoing Finance Minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem (PvdA) at the annual conference of the Foundation for Auditing Research (FAR) held at Nyenrode. The Foundation for Auditing Research was founded in 2015 and aims to strengthen the learning curve of the audit industry and its stakeholders, provide a platform for accountancy degree programs and, in the long term, support accountancy scholars in the Netherlands and beyond.

In memoriam Hein Verbruggen
On June 13, Nyenrode alumnus and former sports manager Hein Verbruggen (75) passed away. Hein was one of the most important sports managers the Netherlands has ever known. He was honorary chairman of the UCI international cycling association, honorary member of the International Olympic Committee and honorary citizen of the city of Beijing. A pioneer and go-getter who - rightly or wrongly - will remain forever inextricably linked with the tumultuous doping scandal in cycling during the 1995-2005 period and the ultimate downfall of sports legend Lance Armstrong. Over the past several years, Hein helped a great deal behind the scenes with the setting up of Nyenrode Sports Inc.
