December 2016
Dear Mr./Mrs.,

Nyenrode is so beautiful around this festive period. The castle and the gate are so splendidly decorated, and little lights and Christmas trees are everywhere. I’m proud to be able to work in such a special place. Thanks to the efforts of my colleagues who are responsible for the estate, and alumni willing to donate to their alma mater, Nyenrode becomes steadily more beautiful. Among other things this year we’ve tackled the peach greenhouse, and a lot of work is underway on the exit gate.

Next year we hope to be able to restore the orangery. Our estate has undergone enormous improvement over recent years, but we’re not there yet. Twelve of the 27 monuments are in good condition.

We really need your help to maintain the estate and make it even more beautiful. With a donation, so that we could restore the pheasantry or one of the other monuments for instance, or as a volunteer in the garden. The work is never really finished here. We’re short of hands over the winter to clear the leaves away, and in the summer any help is welcome in the rose garden.

When you’re sitting near the Christmas tree with a good glass of wine, it’s time to think of your good resolutions. Give some thought then to Nyenrode Fund (Stichting Nyenrode Fonds) and whether you can and would like to mean something to our university in 2017. If the answer’s yes, then please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me to investigate the possibilities.

I wish you all a very wonderful festive season and a splendid 2017!

Tanja Visser

Director Nyenrode Fund

Fred Lachotzki valedictorian lecture
These days business leaders face the fact that the heavy administrative task they bear is difficult to perform, or cannot be completed at all, with the familiar concepts. This was the suggestion of Prof. Fred Lachotzki, lecturer in Corporate Strategy at Nyenrode, on November 30 in his emeritus address, ‘Plea for a future’. He argued for companies to choose consciously to take on the role of welfare and wellbeing driver, while involving all their stakeholders. During the ceremony, Professor Fred Lachotzki was also appointed as Officer to the Order of Oranje-Nassau.

Repayment of revolving scholarship enables new one
Nyenrode Fund (Stichting Nyenrode Fonds), set up by alumni of the university, facilitates Nyenrodians and others to create scholarships paid for by donations, as well as generating money for investments in the university and for financing the restoration of monuments. It was in 2011 when Nyenrode Fund initiated the idea of revolving scholarships, a concept which is prevalent in many US universities. These are scholarships for talented students who do not have sufficient resources themselves to pay for their studies at Nyenrode. One of these talented students is Johan Schaap, who has since paid his scholarship money back to Nyenrode Fund.

Organic Fairtrade coffee
Nyenrode and catering partner Vermaat serve Café Intención Ecológico, an organic Fairtrade coffee. The  Fairtrade/Max Havelaar hallmark guarantees that this coffee has been purchased from farmers’ organizations in developing countries at a fair price and under international Fairtrade trading conditions. This means a direct contribution to better living and working conditions for coffee growers. Buyers sign a contract for an extended period, and with a purchasing obligation. The small farmers receive a surcharge to invest in infrastructure, the environment, medical care and education. The ‘bio’ hallmark guarantees that the coffee-beans from which this blend is made were grown in a careful and organically-responsible manner.
