November 2016
Dear Mr./Mrs.,

There’s been a lot happening in November, both for staff and for all the alumni. Now that the month is almost over and new events are cropping up, a few indelible memories stand out. Two alumni, Henjo Hielkema and Milly ter Heege, won me over entirely with their amusing stories from the past. What was so nice about it was that they themselves realize all too well that the past is behind us, but elements occurred in the past which I’d really like to preserve for the future. And then there’s our new Professor, Nick van Dam. He has kept us captivated throughout the entire lecture. Without any difficulty, and with a comic note. A few days later, on Sunday, saw a classical concert delivered in the Coachhouse, with a performance which wouldn’t have gone amiss in the Concertgebouw. And all this happened at Nyenrode in just a month.

What I’m particularly proud of is the new minor for medical students we are doing in collaboration with VUmc. This is real educational innovation which I’ve seen nowhere else. An interesting collaboration too, because here private and public institutions come together in a successful program. Oh yes, and then there’s also something about Times Higher Education rankings. We’re in the top 3 of universities whose graduates are the most-sought-after by the corporate world. A small university, but with a huge reach, then.

Miša Džoljić

Rector Magnificus

Minor for medical administrators
The Amsterdam VU University Medical Center and Nyenrode Business Universiteit are the first institutions in the Netherlands to offer a full minor in Leadership and Management for medical students. The care landscape has undergone significant change since the introduction of the free market. Various care stakeholders determine to a lesser or greater degree how the system and its funding operate. This dynamic involves leadership and organizational issues for directors and administrators of care institutions.

Research into accountants’ ‘professional skepticism’
In order to be able to provide a high audit quality, an auditor must have an 'attitude of professional skepticism', according to the international standards. A lack of professional skepticism has caused many of the well-known scandals in the auditing world. Dr. Olof Bik RA (Nyenrode Business Universiteit) and Dr. Reggy Hooghiemstra (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen) conducted research into the impact of traditions, customs, values, religion and unwritten social rules, and concluded that international cultural differences exercise an influence on professional skepticism.
