This is the October edition of the new e-mail newsletter of the Nyenrode Business Universiteit, intended for students, alumni, employees and other interested parties. Women majority in IMBA class
On October 12th, the new cohort of full-time International MBA students officially started their studies at Nyenrode. 41 Participants with 20 different nationalities begun on their journey of becoming global responsible leaders. Those talents came from all over the world, with average work experience of 8.5 years as well as different industrial and educational backgrounds. In this class, women are the majority – 59% of all participants.

 TEDXNyenrodeUniversity
On the 3rd of October the first edition of the TEDxNyenrodeUniversity event took place at Nyenrode Business Universiteit. The event was initiated and organized by students of Nyenrode, with the support of Nyenrode Business Universiteit and Nyenrode’s alumni network. The event was centered around the theme Building Bricks for the Future.

Nyenrode Career Event
The annual Nyenrode Career Event took place on Friday October 23. The purpose of the event was for students and companies to get to know one another. Alumnus and former Prime Minister Wim Kok was interviewed by students during the event about his political career and his time in business.

NBP visits Cambridge University
From September 24 to 26, 2015, three groups of the New Board Program (NBP) visited the Judge Business School of Cambridge University for the international module of the NBP. One of the highlights was the meeting with Michael Woodford, former CEO of the Japanese company Olympus, who brought to light large-scale fraud at his employer’s.

MT Goudhaantjes 2015
Every year Magazine Management Team (MT) publishes the Goudhaantjes 100, a list of Dutch management talent that has been put together based on talks with headhunters, tips from readers and research. The list of 100 top talents includes 16 Nyenrode alumni.

Oldest family firm
The renovation and maintenance company Knaapen Groep (1652), from the town of Son in the Dutch province North Brabant, is the oldest family firm in the Netherlands. This is the conclusion of Baker Tilly Berk and Nyenrode Business Universiteit after conducting research into the oldest family firms in the Netherlands. The research also revealed that there are currently 11 Dutch family firms that are more than 300 years old.

Nyenrode supports iMPACT Booster
iMPACT Booster is the first Business Accelerator that stimulates entrepreneurs to use an innovative product or service as a solution to the food shortage in developing countries. Through the iMPACT Booster six organizations combine their strengths. ICCO Cooperation, New World Campus, Woord & Daad, 1%Club, Wilde Ganzen and Nyenrode Business Universiteit provide knowledge, networks and financial support to innovative entrepreneurs in emerging economies.

Inspiration afternoon Lean Leadership
On Thursday September 24 an inspiration afternoon took place at the Nyenrode Lean Institute in Breukelen. The meeting, which had as theme 'The journey of organizations to Lean and Lean Leadership', attracted sixty attendees. The speakers of this afternoon, who were closely involved in the Lean implementation within their own company, shared their experiences.

(S)LDP Alumni Day on friendship
On September 17 the alumni evening of the (Senior) Leadership Development Program took place, this time with the theme "Theatre of friendship ". Edgar Karssing, Associate Professor of Business Ethics, took the audience on a journey from the Ancient Greeks to the Enlightenment. What did philosophers such as Artistoteles and Thomas Hobbes understand friendship to mean? Why do we look for friendships? What is actually an ideal friendship? Dr. Jaap Schaveling, Associate Professor of Leadership & Cooperation, in turn examined the evolutionary explanations and dangers of friendship.

Study trip part-time MSc to China
On September 18, 51 part-time MSc Management students of class 18 went on their international study trip to Beijing. The study trip forms part of the International Business & Economic Environment module for the master phase of the study program. Entrepreneurship is a recurring aspect of the entire program as can be seen from the fact that the students not only choose the destination of the trip but also are responsible for the entire organization. For this they use the Nyenrode network as well as their own contacts overseas.

Sport collaboration
Nyenrode Business Universiteit and the Van Asdonck Sports Centre in Breukelen have joined forces to provide sports facilities and activities to Nyenrode students and staff. In this collaboration Van Asdonck makes its sports facilities available to the students and staff of Nyenrode. In addition, Van Asdonck provides group lessons that are given by qualified sports teachers.

Fit for College Boot Camp
Saturday 7:30 in the morning. At this time most people would still be in bed enjoying a lazy morning after a busy week of work. But not at Nyenrode. Early in the morning a group of students would already be preparing themselves for their Saturday morning class where they are put through their paces during the high intensity ‘Fit for College’ Boot Camp.

The Boot Camp was conceived and organized by Eric Pasman, Angelo Kaijser and Thijs van Leeuwen, students of the part-time MSc in Management at Nyenrode who work for the Dutch army. They combine the ‘Fit for College’ principles of Fit, Fun & Learn with the Nyenrode core values of Leadership, Entrepreneurship & Stewardship by providing an active contribution to the physical and mental
well-being of the Nyenrode Community.

Marie Claire Starters Award 2015
At the end of December at the Kromhouthallen in Amsterdam, Online art platform FRAEMd learned that they had won the Marie Claire Starters Award 2015. One part of the prize is participation in the lecture series Digital Marketing Strategy and Social Media of the Nyenrode Business Universiteit.

Systems Thinking for Managers
In many organizations the issues of the day hold sway. Managers focus mainly on short-term solutions and lose sight of the big picture, resulting in the same old problems constantly returning. In the book “Systems Thinking for Managers” Bill Bryan and Nyenrode lecturer Jaap Schaveling help managers to break this vicious circle.

Mushroom oasis
The VARA television program Vroege Vogels has produced an item on “the most special mushroom spot in the Netherlands”: the Nyenrode estate. The program was broadcast on Tuesday October 13.
